Aidan Foster presented Drupal's revolutionary AI-powered Canvas UI, demonstrating how the platform is transforming web page creation for marketers and content creators. As founder of Foster Interactive and UX lead for the Drupal AI project, Foster showed how the new system can create on-brand landing pages in minutes rather than hours or days. The presentation centered around a prototype developed through the Drupal AI Partners initiative, where 30+ agencies collaborate to make Drupal competitive with large AI-powered platforms without vendor lock-in.
The demo featured a fictional SaaS company called Finrop, showcasing how marketers can create multiple landing pages for pay-per-click campaigns by simply inputting ad copy prompts. The system leverages four key components: site templates with component-based design systems, Canvas UI (a Figma-like editor), an AI Context Control Center serving as the knowledge hub, and autonomous AI agents. Foster demonstrated creating event registration and white paper download pages in real-time, with the AI selecting appropriate images from a 200-image library, writing copy, and assembling components based on organizational rules stored in the context center.
The system achieved an 80% success rate, with one out of five attempts being excellent, three needing minor tuning, and one requiring complete restart. A particularly powerful feature showed autonomous agents updating multiple pages site-wide when organizational facts changed in the context center, automatically identifying and drafting updates for all affected pages. Foster emphasized that despite the apparent 'magic' of AI, human insight remains crucial - the system requires substantial upfront work including audience personas, brand strategy, content guidelines, and design system rules.
Without proper context documents, the same prompts produced 'AI slop' and hallucinated content. The prototype currently runs on GPT-4.1 but is designed to be model-agnostic, supporting self-hosted solutions.
Foster concluded by stressing that as AI-generated content floods the internet, organizations must double down on authentic, human-centered research and strategy to remain distinct, warning that 'human insight cannot be outsourced to AI.
