This session captures the 2025 Phocuswright Hall of Fame induction ceremony honoring Richard (Rich) Barton and Erik Blachford — two figures central to the founding and early growth of Expedia. The inductees were chosen for their instrumental roles in shaping the online travel industry.
Rich Barton's induction traces back to 1994, when as a young product manager at Microsoft he persuaded Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer to abandon a planned CD-ROM travel guide and instead build a direct-to-consumer online travel booking platform. That decision led to the launch of Expedia.com in 1996, with Barton serving as CEO from founding through the company's IPO in 1999 and until 2003. Barton credits attending a Phocuswright conference as the moment he realized the internet would revolutionize travel by giving power directly to consumers. In his recorded acceptance message, he recalls the early Expedia team of 150 people at Microsoft spinning out as an independent public company on the same day his first child was born. He highlights Expedia's resilience through the dot-com bust of 2000 — surviving because it had real profits and real growth — and through the September 11 attacks, when the Expedia team chose to accelerate rather than retreat. Barton departed in 2003 when Barry Diller and Dara Khosrowshahi's group acquired Expedia, and he subsequently founded Zillow and Glassdoor, two additional unicorn businesses. Barton's acceptance message closes with a forward-looking conviction that AI — which feeds on data, and travel has enormous data — will drive the next major wave of consumer empowerment in travel, and he expresses high confidence in current industry leaders who are actively leaning into that wave.
Erik Blachford was a member of Barton's founding team at Expedia, leading marketing before succeeding Barton as CEO in 2003 and holding that role until 2004, when he handed the reins to Dara Khosrowshahi. After Expedia, Blachford served as executive chairman of CouchSurfing, CEO of Butterfield and Robinson, and CEO of Terrapass, and has spent nearly two decades as an active investor and adviser helping early-stage travel companies find product-market fit and scale through his firm Pine5 Ventures.
The ceremony itself is brief, with both inductees recognized for rejecting the status quo, building new technologies, and launching businesses that helped define modern travel distribution. Barton's recorded message is the substantive centerpiece, offering a rare first-person account of Expedia's origin story and a direct call to action for current travel industry leaders to embrace AI-driven innovation.
Good morning everyone. Thanks to those individuals who joined me for the third straight day at 7 am this morning on our run. Morgan, I think you and I were four in a row. So appreciate that. So in 2018, we created the Focusright Hall of Fame to honor those individuals who played an instrumental role in shaping the travel industry. Those industry icons did not accept the status quo and they built new technologies and launched new businesses to help us to where we are here today. This year we are ...
